Principia Philosophiae. Ultima Editio...WITH: Specimina Philosophiae: seu Dissertatio De Methodo...(&) Dioptrice, et Meteora. AND: Passiones Animae DESCARTES, RENE [1596-1650] Amsterdam: Daniel Elsevir, 1664. Hardcover. Very Good. Daniel Elsevir, 1664. Quarto. Pp. 20 p.l., 222; [2] blank, [16], 248; [24], 92, [4] index. Three separate title pages. Engraved frontis portrait, woodcut printer's devices, initials, ornaments, and numerous textual woodcuts. Contemporary speckled calf, gilt panelled spine between raised bands. Binding a little rubbed at extremities, but on the whole an exceptionally clean, crisp copy internally, in a remarkably well-preserved binding. An early combined edition of Descartes's Philosophical Works, containing 1. "Principia Philosophiae", first published in Latin at Amsterdam in 1644. This is perhaps the most comprehensive of all Descartes's works, treating of both his theory of mind and his philosophy of matter. After recapitulating the conclusions concerning the mind arrived at the "Meditations" in part one, he goes on in the remainder of the work to deal with the principles of physical science, the concept of matter as extension, the laws of motion, the phenomena of heat, light , gravity, etc., and, at a more general level, the nature and justification of scientific hypothesis. This work also contains Descertes's famous vortex theory, by which he tried to reconcile Copernican astronomy with Biblical teaching, as well as the first scientific theory of magnetism. 2. The "Discourse on Method", which prefaces the treatises on "Dioptrics" and "Meteors", was first published in French as "Discours de la Methode" in 1637, and later appeared in a Latin version, revised by Descartes, as "Specimina Philosophicae" in 1644. Here we have the statement of the famous Cartesian 'method of doubt', rendering 'clear and distinct' ideas, which alone guarantees the certainty of human knowledge. 3. "The Passions of the Soul", Descartes's last work, was published in French in 1649 as "Les Passions de l' Ame". It considers the relation between the soul and the body, the action of the will, the emotions, and other moral issues.
