1. “Pechuck” Arctic Signed, Association Copy

Item Price: $250 Can

Item Description: “Pechuck” Lorne Knight’s Adventures In The Arctic, Richard G. Montgomery, Dodd, Mead and Company, New York, 1932. Hardcover no dust jacket. 8vo, 291 pages. First Edition. Signed by author. Also signed by Lorne Knight’s father with a gift inscription on the dedication page with is dedicated to Mr. and Mrs. John I. Knight. Gift is to Mr. A. J. T. Taylor. Taylor’s Arctic Collection was donated to the University of British Columbia; much of the collection was assembled with the help of his friend, the Arctic explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson. Lorne Knight died on the Canadian Arctic Expedition commanded by Vilhjalmur Stefansson. Two other inscriptions, one dated February, 26, 1934 that speaks to the inexperience of the young men who died on the expedition. Also an inscription on title page discussing meaning of “Pechuck.” Condition is very good. A newspaper clipping was inserted at the copyright page and has left discolouring. The item has been left in (It is in-itself odd). Slight bump at top of front cover. Corners of boards mildly rubbed.

Dust jacket is quite worn with small chips and tears around edges, a little marked, and foxing on inside. (Now in mylar) Slight foxing to half-title page.

Item Description: The Rebellion of 1837 In Upper Canada, no author cited. Typescript carbon penciled annotations. 36 pages, 8 1/2 x 14. Blue covers, paper-clipped. Heading on sheets is COO & THOMPSON, STENOGRAPHIC REPORTER, 1122 FEDERAL BUILDING, ADELAIDE 3526. First line indicates the centenary is coming in December so it appears to be from 1937. Folded in envelope as found. A take on the1837 Rebellion 100 years after. Condition is quite delicate, wear around edges of sheets.

4. Handwritten American Tour of Europe 1889-90

Item Description: A handwritten journal/diary of an American woman touring Europe in 1889-1890 from Antwerp to Paris. No author name but indicates she is traveling with her sister or friend Florence and a Mr. and Mrs. Perino. Travels by train and carriage, stays at finest hotels and dines at fancy restaurants. Written text on 43 pages. Very good condition. 7 1/2 x 5 inches. Red cloth and paper boards.

5. Handwritten Military Dissertation on Austro-Prussian War (from 1899-1901)

Item Description: 76-page dissertation on “The Campaign in Germany 1866” or the Austro-Prussian War. Written and drawn by Captain W. C. Symon, member of the Royal Horse Artillery of the British army; likely during studies at the Military Academy. Circa 1899-1901. 17 finely drawn maps. Dissertation assessed as “Most Excellent Paper… and the maps first rate.” Written in a Laboratory Exercise Book of the period. 9 x 7 inch. Very good condition. Front hinge slightly loose. Wear around edges of boards.

Item Description: “Kurds in Iraq” No author or date, circa 1979 as this is the last year for which statistics are provided in charts. Hardcover, no dust jacket. 60 pages with colour photos on almost all pages. Printed by Dar Al-Khuloud, Beirut, Lebanon. Approximately 29 x 21 cm. First photo is of Saddam Hussein although he is not mentioned in the text. The book describes The Law of Self-Rule and the efforts of Iraq to improve conditions for the Kurds in the areas of agriculture, health, culture, education, infrastructure and tourism. An odd and interesting little item.

Text in Chinese (Information is from a translator) Dust jacket has a one inch tear at top right corner. Many photographers must have been involved to compile these fantastic images of this vast parade and show of military might.

She moved to London in 1932 and became the first black woman employed by the BBC during World War II. Produced the program Calling the West Indies which became Caribbean Voices, a forum for Caribbean literary work. Previous owner’s gift inscription at top of title page. General nicks and small tears around edges of covers.

Unusual in that this was Limited to 200 numbered copies but this is unbound and not numbered; unsure how this fits in with the numbered copies and why it was not bound. Illustrated from the original wood-engraved blocks: frontispiece, head- and tail-piece and 15 engravings on pages. Printed on Barcham Green Sandwich paper by Simon Lawrence on a 1853 Albion Press.

Item Description: Radiographic Atlas of the Human Skull Normal Variants & Pseudo-Lesions, Gerhart S. Schwarz, M.D., Charles R. Golthamer, M.D., Hafner Publishing Company, New York, 1965, spiral binding, 43 x 35 cm. 12 plates. Some condition issues: Previous owner’s name on half-title page. Small moisture stains to half-title page and tops of text pages; boards are speckled with white paint dots. But this is not about the medicine, the spots somehow make sense as it indicates the book was in the hands of an artist. It’s all about the wonderful plates; white and gray scale on a black background, each with a full-size hand-drawn x-ray illustration of the human skull with an acetate overlay divided into quadrants, with numbers which correspond to an index of medical terms on the facing page. Some marks to the plates but overall they are in good condition.
