Early edition, closely following the first Canadian edition of McClelland, Goodchild and Stewart of 1917 [see Spadoni & Donnelly 331). The imprint on both spine and title page omit mention of Goodchild. No designation of the printer.

Non-authorial gift inscription dated Xmas 1919 on endpaper. Top corners lightly bumped, else book and pictorial label are in fine condition. Dust jacket with light dust soiling and wear, including tiny edge chips and small tears, but essentially intact and 97% complete.

21.5 cm x 15.5 cm, publisher’s original green decorated cloth, blocked in pale green and gilt. Binding is signed by initials, which appear to be WCG,  With Sixteen Illustrations in Colour by Stephen Reid (all present, with one duplicate).

Concerns legends and stories surrounding King Conor mac Nessa and Cuchulain.

One leaf with loss to outer margin but text unaffected (loss apparently from being roughly opened), hinge paper splitting but text block holding firm, corner and extremities lightly rubbed, else very good or better, with the covers quite clean.

Samuel Beckett (1906-1989) was a Nobel Prize Laureate and is considered one of the giants of 20th Century Literature and Drama. His signature is scarce and desirable.

20.7 x 25.5 cm, original b&w press photo. The caption notes Beny’s personal and professional names, and provides information regarding the two photos he is handling in the picture.

This photo originates from the files of a press / news agency, and shows considerable handling wear, as well as notations and rubber stamps on the verso which indicate some of its former use. Light creasing, rippling, darkening and staining are present, but condition is good overall.

Front free endpaper has two areas where the paper has thinned [likely from label or tape removal], endpapers lightly browned, paper stock has toned, light foxing to page edges, else very good in dust jacket which has several small chips affecting the spine titling and the “R” in Romola on the front panel. Spine panel is slightly darkened and has small, light stains. Presents well in a supplied mylar dust jacket protector.

With the book label of James Bruce. Fetching Victorian travel book with extremely well printed chromo views.
Heavy stock has caused the binding to separate in at various points, however the text block remains firm in its binding. Recent ink name and date neatly written on front free endpaper, binding with only light rubbing, else a near fine copy – nice and clean, inside and out.
