3. Richard R. Holmes. Queen Victoria, in a handsome binding by Bagguley.

Folio (12 ¾” x 10”), signed half red morocco and boards by Bagguley of Newcastle-under- Lyme, pp. ii, 200, [1]; iIllustrated with plates engraved and printed by Boussod, Valadon and Co.

The author was the Librarian to the Queen.

The binder, “George Thomas Bagguley (b.1860) established himself as a bookseller in Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire in 1890. Though the firm appears in the Directories from 1892 until 1940 as booksellers and not bookbinders, a photograph of the Bagguley shop in the High Street taken in 1925 shows the front bearing the lettering “Bookbinder, Bookseller, Printer and Stationer”. Bookbinding took place on the premises and the shop closed in 1952. The work was often of the highest quality, as Bagguley employed a number of the best finishers, including Louis Genth and Thomas E. Caley.” [from the BL catalogue].

Armorial bookplate on pastedown, tidy ownership on first blank, corners bumped, light rubbing to corners and joints, just starting at top of upper board, else a lovely copy – very good or better.

Small tear at front gutter, else near fine in dust jacket with a few short edge tears and some loss to the spine ends and corner tips. Dust jacket sized a bit taller than the book, which has undoubtedly contributed to the edge wear.

A nice copy of this classic work of Canadian Prairie fiction.

8” x 8”, publisher’s original stapled pictorial card covers, unpaginated but circa pp. [32]; illustrated. Book is printed in blue on white paper.

Inscribed in the year of publication by Frances Itani to her parents, and signed using her family name “Sam”. Additionally signed by the illustrator, Canadian artist Molly [Lamb] Bobak.

Molly Bobak CM ONB (née Lamb; February 25, 1920 – March 2, 2014) was a Canadian teacher, writer, printmaker and painter working in oils and watercolours. During World War II, she was the first Canadian woman artist to be sent overseas to document Canada’s war effort, and in particular, the work of the Canadian Women’s Army Corps (C.W.A.C), as one of Canada’s war artists. An outstanding copy with Bobak’s scarce signature and a unique family inscription by author Frances Itani.

“64-page book, hand-set in 14 pt. Garamond Roman, printed on an 1890, 8 x 12 Chandler/Price press on Saint-Armand’s “salad” paper (cream coloured mould-made paper). Erik Mohr has created 14 outstanding lino-cut prints that we have over-printed to make them integral with the text. Paper artist Emily Cook has created handmade endpapers to capture both the garden and paradise in an . impressionistic style, using plant material from Merilyn’s garden. All materials are acid-free to insure longevity of this book as art. The covers will be wrapped in Japanese Ajisai Gold, which translates as Gold Hyacinth”.

Copy #144 of 290 copies.

Fine in publisher’s hand stitched St. Armand sleeve, complete with paper knife for the reader to open the many uncut leaves.
