Architects Frederic Cumberland and William Storm designed the Romanseque Revival-style building with inspiration from the designs of Oxford and Cambridge Universities in England. Construction began on October 4, 1856. University College first opened its doors to students three years later on October 4, 1859.

This photograph is not dated, but appears to date from the early 20th century.

Item Description: Original press photo, circa 8 x 10″, black and white. Rubber -stamped information on verso dates this item to circa 1967.

Harold Barling Town, OC (June 13, 1924 – December 27, 1990) was a Canadian abstract painter. He is best known as a member of Painters Eleven a group of abstract artists active in Toronto from 1954-1960. Town coined the name of the group, which was based simply on the number of artists that were present the first meeting. He also worked as an illustrator, a profession he credited with imparting a sense of discipline that would last throughout his entire artistic career. His early illustrative [work] appeared in magazines such as Maclean’s and Mayfair. (Wikipedia).

As this photo originated from a working newspaper file, there is light handling wear, including some small creases. But certainly in very good condition.

Frances Norma Loring, RCA, (October 14, 1887– February 5, 1968) was a Canadian sculptor. Loring studied in Europe before enrolling at the Art Institute of Chicago, where she studied with Lorado Taft. She was a member of both the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and the Ontario Society of Artists. Later she was involved in the organization of the Federation of Canadian Artists (1941) and the Canada Council (1950s). In 1960 she was the Canadian representative at the Venice Biennale. Loring was the creator of two notable sculptures in Canada, Queen Elizabeth Way Monument (1939), located now in Toronto and a statue of Robert Borden (1957), located on Parliament Hill, Ottawa. The Tierpark Hagenbeck is a zoo in Stellingen, Hamburg, Germany. The collection began in 1863 with animals that belonged to Carl Hagenbeck Sr. (1810–1887), a fishmonger who became an amateur animal collector. The park itself was founded by Carl Hagenbeck Jr. in 1907. It is known for being the first zoo to use open enclosures surrounded by moats, rather than barred cages, to better approximate animals’ natural environments. (Wikipedia).
