Karol Krysik Books was established in 2010. We are based in Toronto, Canada. We are a general antiquarian bookshop with a focus on folklore, legends, fairy tales, publishers’ bindings, illustrated books, detective/crime fiction, literature, history and art.
We occasionally issue lists and catalogues and participate in bookfairs in Canada and abroad.
We buy individual books and collections, as well as ephemera, posters, photographs, archives and other interesting and unusual or rare items.

Three photographs laid in, the fold-out one is dated 1964-5. Advertising chapbook. Pp. (26). Mr. McCance learned to make vestments at an abbey when he became a monk of the Cisterian Order. Eventually he left the order and took it up as his business and set up in St. Thomas Ontario. Rare catalogue.

8vo. 640pp., with last page mis-numbered. More recent reback in smooth black calf over the original leather boards. Thick gilt titles right on the spine, slightly off and imperfect, spine faded at the top. Edges a little scuffed and the contents with very little spotting, overall a clean and tight copy. With 40 illustrations, mostly in colour. This copy lacking 4 plates listed, with 4 plates added (not listed). The missing plates include; Indian Settlement, The Eagle, The Bison, The Grizzly Bear. The plates present and not in the list of illustrations include coloured portraits of Chiefs; Black Hawk, Iroquois Chief, Chief of the Delawares, Mandan Chief.

Two catalogs, 1908 (i) and 1915 (ii). (i) Cream embossed pictorial wraps, brown ink, edges a little dented, dampstain on bottom right front, foxing to spine, and chipped near rear bottom corner. Four pages dog-eared, and dampstain continues, but otherwise clean interior. Envelope tipped in containing ring sizing card. Additional envelope and order form loose. (ii) Cream embossed pictorial wraps, black lettering, bent at bottom, chipped on heel, browned on back. Small tear to bottom pf page 89 but otherwise clean interior. Contains some plates with 1 colour. Three supplementary catalogs, 6 pages, 2 pages, and 2 pages, laid in. One of the order forms, still present, has been detached. Large octavo. Henry Birks started with a single store, that eventually grew to the Birk’s chain we know today. These catalogues show that they used to sell a much wider variety of goods.

206 pp. Bound in reddish brown card covers with printing in black on front cover. Some age toning to pages, spine is wrinkled, back cover is creased at lower left corner. Still a very nice copy of this scarce Canadian service manual.

32mo, 36pp.  blank. In full calf with gilt stamped border designs to both boards and spine, with gilt title on red leather spine label. Housed in a blank cloth chemise and slipcase. Early 20th century illuminated manuscript containing prayers during mass. Produced for the commissioner’s grandson Henry Pahud, in memory of his first communion. Appears unfinished. With one full page miniature of Jesus at the beginning. With 11 large initials, and several smaller ones. Each page with a different hand-painted border, with 11 unique figures (angels, strange creatures etc.) within borders and on the last page. Rear board with a small nick, some very little foxing throughout and some darkening along the gutter of a few leaves but overall a fine little volume.

Gallery Edition, boxed, 1979. Box [60 x 51cm]. Box covered in cream cloth with leather straps binding the top and bottom together. The straps are looped through a leather buckle and held in place with small hand-cut twigs. In the center of the box is a tooled leather cut-out with Morrisseau’s name in the Cree syllabic. The sides of the box are made of a light-coloured wood. The entire package is in Fine condition, save the wrinkled wax paper covering the actual book. The Art of Norval Morrisseau, by Lister Sinclair and Jack Pollock. Oblong 4to. Fine copy, no dust jacket as issued, unread. The book is the same as the trade edition except it has been completely bound in a leather matching the straps on the exterior of the box. Signed by Morrisseau. The book rests on a hard tray to keep the book from moving around in the box. The tray the book rests on lifts out, revealing the portfolio of serigraphs underneath. All of the serigraphs are Fine, as issued, each being just a bit smaller than the dimensions of the box. Each serigraph is signed by Morrisseau in Syllabics. Each serigraph is numbered and signed. The titles of the serigraphs are: The Dawn / Shaman Conjuring Speech / Composition with Loons / Young Gulls Watching / Shaman and Apprentice. A fine copy. Limited edition. Dust jacket design by Vanessa Bell. Inscribed by author on the front endpaper to long-time Arts and Letters Club, Toronto member Wallace Joyce, dated Elsfield, 1947. [WITH] 4pp. letter on Elsfield Manor stationary to W. Joyce (signed Susan Tweedsmuir, 1947). Susan Buchan was the wife of Former Governor General of Canada, John Buchan (Lord Tweedsmuir). Also included a solander box of quarter blue morocco over decorated boards. Limted edition of 130 copies of the deluxe edition numbered in Roman. This is number C. Volume one with text by A.R. Duffyand 26 plates. Volume two with the text by Morris with 44 engravings. Solander box with folio set of all the drawings and engravings undbound. This was a Kelmscott project never completed. THe drawings were kept by Morris family and given to the Society of Antiquaries in 1938 and rediscovered in the 60’s and now published in 1974 in this exquisite edition. Minor wear only.

Mid twentieth century full calf, name and date stamped in gilt to the spine, with a morocco leather title label in gilt, compartments and bands in gilt and a decorated gilt stamped border to the front board and rear. The corners a little scuffed, one lightly bumped, the boards and spine with several light scuffs and scratches and a fade to the spine. Light foxing and offsetting to the frontis portrait and title-page, with little spotting or foxing throughout. One of the maps folded back with extra folds, two maps with small repairs to margin rips, but overall a good clean copy. Binding ticket of A. Winstanley Artist & Bookbinder, Salisbury England.

Second and best edition, first was 1700, edited by George Costard and Thomas Hunt.

Interiors clean and the binding tight, but boards overall a bit grubby. The eighteenth book published by The First Edition Club. One of 350 copies printed by The Shakespeare Head Press.
