Karol Krysik Books was established in 2010. We are based in Toronto, Canada. We are a general antiquarian bookshop with a focus on folklore, legends, fairy tales, publishers’ bindings, illustrated books, detective/crime fiction, literature, history and art.
We occasionally issue lists and catalogues and participate in bookfairs in Canada and abroad.
We buy individual books and collections, as well as ephemera, posters, photographs, archives and other interesting and unusual or rare items.

Very light stain to the margin of last two pages, else a clean and tight copy. With numerous in-text illustrations throughout. Thick gilt titles right on the spine, slightly off and imperfect, spine faded at the top. Edges a little scuffed and the contents with very little spotting, overall a clean and tight copy. With 40 illustrations, mostly in colour. This copy lacking 4 plates listed, with 4 plates added (not listed). The missing plates include; Indian Settlement, The Eagle, The Bison, The Grizzly Bear. The plates present and not in the list of illustrations include coloured portraits of Chiefs; Black Hawk, Iroquois Chief, Chief of the Delawares, Mandan Chief.

Second edition. Bound in 8s. [170 x 110mm]. Pp. [x], 251. Illustrated engraved title-page signed on the plate “R. Gaywood fecit. 54”, and engraved frontispiece of a coat-of-arms, and 7 plates of Creation Robes of the nobility, and 41 text illustrations of heraldic shields. Some irregular pagination, but text is continuous. Early binding of blind-ruled full calf leather. Recently re-backed, very handsome, with gilt leather spine label, blind stamped compartments and the date gilt stamped to the spine foot. Engraved bookplate of William Thomas with the edges torn away as if someone tried to remove it. Early, if not contemporary, ink notes on pastedown, front endpaper with paper repair to the upper right corner, notes on front free endpaper, and in white space beneath frontispiece, paper tanning and with occasional, very light foxing. Originally published in 1655, reprinted several times, “and for many years continued to be the most popular text-book with all who studied heraldry. The plates by R. Rebound in black leather with the original yellow, printed covers laid down on both the upper and lower covers, new sewn endbands, flat spine ruled in gilt, Lovell and Gibson advert dated June 1859, tipped to rear pastedown. Original covers worn and scuffed, with some small, contemporary pen annotations to original upper cover. Contemporary ink signature at head of title-page. Overall, a now sturdy, very good copy of a rare and early Toronto directory.

Half black morocco leather over black cloth boards, decorated compartments in gilt, five raised bands and gilt lettering right on the leather to two compartments. Spine bands, spine ends, and board corners scuffed. All edges gilt. Previous owner’s name on blank label to paste-down. Some light thumbing to the margins to a few pages, but overall very clean throughout and the binding tight and square. Scarce work on Japanese art, religion, folklore and society, first published in French. This is the First American edition, translated from the Second French edition by Mrs. Cashel Hoey.

8 volumes. 1863-1887. 8vo. The Fourth edition. Complete with all maps and plans as called for, many folding, mostly in black and white. Bound in half green morocco over marbled boards. Gilt decorated compartments and lettering right on the leather of two. Top edges gilt and marbled endpapers. The spines rubbed and scuffed in several places, with some light rubbing along the joints, but all boards are firmly attached and the bindings tight and square with no split hinges. Light foxing throughout but with heavier foxing to the endpapers and some plates and plans. Overall a nice clean set.

Spine details off, the lines and spine label are somewhat crooked. Ink name to the front paste-down, light foxing to the first blank, title-page and frontispiece slightly yellowed, but clean throughout and pretty spot-free.

No date, c. 1880. 224pp. Full leather prize binding in brown calf with gilt decorated borders, densely gilt tooled spine compartments and gilt bands, with a red leather spine label, gilt tooled edges and dentelles. Marbled edges and endpapers, with a prize label from the Trinity College School, Port Hope, dated 1884; the school crest in gilt to the front and rear board. Very light rubbing to the corners and a few light scuffs to the covers, the front board is damp-stained and visible, but not nasty, just a bit unfortunate, the book however is clean throughout and the binding is solid. Numerous black and white illustrations throughout. Binding by S. Hogg, stamped to lower front endpaper.

The boards with a few light scratches and small indentations to the rear board. The spine sunned and a little scuffed at the lower two compartments, joints with light cracks in the leather, only to the surface, lightly bumped corners, the boards are tight, hinges strong and the text block square. Light foxing but overall very clean. Binding by F. Bedford, signed recto the front endpaper.

Second blank with a neat gift inscription and a tear in the paper at the top edge from rough page opening. A good copy.

Some pencil to a few pages and light foxing throughout but otherwise a very good, clean set.

Light wear to the spine ends and early cloth repairs to the board edges. Binder’s ticket of Burn, 37 & 38 Kirby St. to rear pastedown. Nice copy.
