Ontario collectors and dealers in old paper and books get together for the biggest one-day ‘vintage print-fest’ of the year.

“I really enjoyed the show, from the old repair and maintenance manuals to the advertising. I particularly liked browsing the books and magazines I used to read, like the Hardy Boys and LIFE. I could have spent hours more at the postcards – the messages on the back give a little snapshot of life ‘back when’ “. Tony R, Orangeville

“The show a lot of fun… loved the old posters, books and photographs… there’s something for every budget, too. I loved looking through the old postcards, the vintage illustrations as well as the messages. Looking forward to the next show!” Susan R, Orangeville

The Book Not Mad, Midland, ON, deals in a variety of subjects, with an emphasis in history, Canadiana, ephemera and occasionally the unusual.

Ron Good, Port Hope “I sell old advertising. Mostly single pages from long dead magazines. The reference to “Life Magazine” is only to let people know the usual dimensions of the ads. Most folks know the page size of “Life”. But many other mags used the same size page. I am constantly amazed, and delighted, at the scope of peoples’ interests. Some want ads relating to a former occupation, of the occupation of a parent/grandparent. People look for every topic under the sun from aircraft through birds, cats, dogs, boats, Canadiana, the Dionne quints, to perfumes, railways, Jewish themes, radio/television, movies and on to world’s fairs, World War 2 and Wurlitzer. And I can’t miss the VW bug!”

Fashion history through sewing patterns.

I sell vintage sewing patterns and ephemera, such as sewing magazines and promotional leaflets. I specialize in designer patterns and good design from any decade.

A few special items I’m saving for the show:

- A rare Twenties coat pattern from McCall. A girl’s size 14, it would also fit a small woman. Very on-trend given film and fashion’s recent love affair with Twenties Deco style.

- A gorgeous Forties pattern for a nightgown and negligee from Simplicity. An elegant look for the vintage boudoir.

- A late Fifties Vogue Couturier pattern for a cocktail ensemble. It’s very Mad Men.

Wychwood Barns – a superb venue:

Wychwood Barns is one of Toronto’s newest event venues. In 1913 the Toronto Transit Commission built the structure in order to be able to service its fleet of streetcars. It functioned for many decades before becoming redundant. A major renovation was undertaken over the last few years, transforming the barns into a magnificent community resource. Reopened in 2008, it is now home to art galleries, artist studios, a regular farmers’ market, and more. The centrepiece of the complex is the ‘Covered Street’, a 200 foot long room, formerly used to overhaul streetcars, but now a spacious event facility. Industrial-chic is the design theme, exposed red brick walls, a wonderful end-to-end glass skylight forming a roof, vintage TTC photographs on the walls.
Wychwood Barns – a superb venue:

Artscape Wychwood Barns is one of Toronto’s newest event venues.

In short, a perfect venue for our Vintage Clothing show.

Jon Clark, London, Specialist in Pressed Glass: Patterned or pressed glass is one of those collecting categories that never fall out of fashion. The product is accessible, affordable and can be used at home every day. Because it was inexpensive, quite durable, and looked good on a table, pressed glass became very popular across the USA and Canada during the period 1850 to about 1910. More than 3000 patterns have been identified.

Pick a focus: Nova Scotia goblets, animal or bird decoration, every piece ever made in a specific pattern, a complete table setting for a holiday dinner – the possibilities are almost without limit. And that is why so many people become obsessed.

Jon has one of the best inventories of Canadian pressed glass in the country. Everything is well-researched and in mint condition. And everything he sells is backed by his expert knowledge.
Audette Antiques, Orono, ON – Eddy and Lorna Audette have been selling antiques for 30 plus years. They sell refinished pine furnishings – from small lamp tables up to large flat wall cupboards and armoires. They also have a large selection of excellent ‘smalls’, accessories and decor items.

Brenda Rogers, CountryStyle Antiques, Meaford
“For Elora we have a Quebec grandfather clock by Joseph Balleray (1840-50) and two fashion dolls. One is an AM (in black) and the other is possibly a Bru. Both dolls are fashion dolls, which were sent out (mainly by French Royalty) to show the latest fashions of the day. They are not children’s toys. By 1900 they had been discontinued and now have become quite rare.

AM was the trademark of Armand Marseille, a German company, and probably the most prolific maker of bisque head dolls. The doll in black is a 30″ AM head #370. The other doll is French. We can’t confirm it’s origin, but from it’s appearance it is probably a Bru. The most sought after French manufacturer of bisque heads. She is 13″ tall, fixed shoulder head which is marked on the back with a 4. Both dolls have mainly original silk clothing.”

When you arrive, go directly to the appraisal tables and get yourself a number. From this number you will be able to approximate your appointment time, then go and have fun searching the rest of the show and enjoy the many wonderful things on offer. If you miss your turn you will be inserted and accommodated at the next number in line. The Clinic operates Saturday from 10 am until 5 pm and Sunday from 11am until 5pm.

At your appointed time, meet with the expert and show her your treasures.

Fees: $12 per item.

Valerie and Bill Hammond from Kitchener, Ontario sell excellent costume jewellery, and high end porcelain and ceramics. Valerie is a Canadian authority on costume jewellery, author of books on the subject and regular guest on Kitchener television programs about antique collecting.

<img src="http://antiqueshowscanada.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/IMG_15271-150x150.jpg" alt="" style="margin: 5px; border: 1px solid black;"title="IMG_1527" width="150" height="150" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1396" /><img src="http://antiqueshowscanada.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/IMG_15291-150x150.jpg" alt=""style="margin: 5px; border: 1px solid black;" title="IMG_1529" width="150" height="150" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1397" />

Antiquarian Books – Port Carling this year features two excellent dealers in old and rare books, prints and manuscripts.

Ken Saunders Books, Stirling, ON – first time in Port Carling, Ken<img src="http://antiqueshowscanada.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/book-selected-for-shpw-023-150x150.jpg" alt=""style="margin: 5px; border: 1px solid black;" title="book-selected-for-shpw 023" width="150" height="150" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1196" /> and Sue Saunders have been in business since 1966, selling rare and out of print books dating back to the 17th century. They also have a large stock of ephemera, letters, documents, autographs and more.

Marvin Post, Attic Books, London, ON – Marvin is among the leading Canadian dealers in antiquarian books. He has an enormous inventory of books, manuscripts and ephemera. As well, he often turns up antiques of an eclectic turn.

Land and Ross Antiques from Shakespeare, ON have been regulars for many years. Peter Land recently found an exceptional painting which they are bringing to Port Carling. Artist: Baigent, circa 1879, the scene is of Newton Island, Lake Rosseau. Not visible in this photo, a lake steamer is making its way through the channel on the right.
<img src="http://antiqueshowscanada.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/b-painting-300x174.jpg" alt=""style="margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 5px; border: 1px solid black;"title="b painting" width="300" height="174" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-1401" />

Dane Rogerson, from Millbrook, well-known for early Canadian furniture and accessories, returns with a large inventory of furniture. Steve and Jacqueline Harris from Wiarton, operate a shop and auction business in Wiarton. With 30 years experience in antiques, they are knowledgeable on a wide range of antiques. Particular interests include Canadian furniture and accessories, Canadian fine art, Asian and European antiques. Antique jewellery is one of their important specialties, backed by Jacqueline’s 21 years experience as a certified goldsmith.

Suzanne Lee and husband Steve are returning to Port Carling for the second time. Like the Youngs, they are good with the ‘Lodge Look’. They sell hunting and fishing memorabilia, boating relics, native artefacts and folk art. Earlier this spring, Suzanne informed us that they have a completely fresh load of stock for this year’s show.

Gerry Marks, Pollikers Antiques, comes back too. Well known around Ontario, Gerry sells refinished pine furniture and Maritimes folk art.

Returning is Jon Clark, from London. He has a passion for Canadian pressed glass. He does a great deal of research and gladly passes his findings on to his customers. A stickler for detail, Jon puts on a superb display of great glass.

Dave’s Old Advertising, from London: David Free and partner Darlene Meeuse. Imagine a turn-of-the-century small town general store and that is close to what you’ll see in these displays – antique coffee tins, old beer trays, advertising pieces, store counter displays, vintage toys and so on.

David Stewart, The Brooklin Antiquarian, has done every Port Carling show since the first one in 1982. Most people are familiar with the excellent pine furniture and large pine mirrors that are David’s specialty. This year he’ll have the usual display of refinished country furniture, including a 10 foot harvest table and an oversized glass door cupboard.

These dealers will be joined by a large contingent of returning regulars. This list includes The Treasure Hut, Pat and Penny George, Scott and Karen Young, Bill Pinkney and David Keogh, the McKaigs from Bayfield and many more. In all, 40 first rate dealers will put on a display of antiques and collectibles that should rank among the best ever assembled at the Muskoka Antique Show.

The Muskoka Antique Show opens Friday evening, from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. The show continues Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Opening night admission is $10.00, Saturday and Sunday, admission is $6.00.

“Vintage fashions are geared more towards women, understandably so with a
gorgeous array of fabrics, colors and styles floating through the decades.
Men’s fashions tended to be more muted, and so the only flamboyance that
allowed men to express themselves was the necktie. From the 30s through to
the 50s, ties were wide, loud and colourful. Like works of art, they were
rayon canvases glowing with unique geometric and abstract designs.”

“I find them irresistible and vanishing treasures. No two are alike and even in our current decade; they can pair with a sedate suit or sports jacket, to bring
an individual and charmingly eccentric look that is hard to copy. At Wychwood I’ll have dozens of great, old ties.”

In short, a perfect venue for our Vintage Clothing show.

Cottage Country Collectibles, Toronto specializes in great vintage and antique items from Muskoka, Northern Ontario and the Kawarthas. We are always on the lookout for old photos, postcards, maps and resort china.

In addition to some great cottage country items, we have reserved the following items for the Old Book and Paper Show :

-A great collection of Duke Boats ephemera
-1915 Rogers Muskoka Lakes Blue Book Directory and Chart

Just acquired for the show:We are bringing a very rare and much sought after program from the first-ever Oldtimers’ hockey game which took place on January 25th, 1952 in Bracebridge, Ontario between the Bantams and NHL Oldtimers. The lineup included many of the hockey greats including Dit Clapper, Roy Worters, Charlie Conacher and Busher Jackson to name just a few. Author, and Society for International Hockey Research member Dr. Eugene Willis, has cited this game as being the first hockey game to be filmed for television and also the first time two standing members of parliament ( Lionel Conacher and Bucko McDonald) have physically gone toe-to-toe. Dr Willis indicated that in all of his research of this game, he has never seen a copy of this program come to market, let alone, an intact one. This is a great piece of hockey history we are excited to bring out to the Toronto Old Book and Paper Show.

In short, a perfect venue for our Vintage Clothing show.
